Hi Jack

K is in Germany at the moment, brushing up on her language skills before giving a paper in Basel (Turkey's still a few days away for her, as well), and so she's had the chance to catch a little German News on the Television.

Of all the Western European countries, Germany probably has one of the most inter-dependent relationships with Turkey, and so Turkish issues figure pretty prominently in the news.

Mostly she said they showed shot after shot of thousands of Turks massing in the streets of Istanbul, protesting the War, NATO (or is it OTAN?) and of course the U.S.. K remarked rather blithely, "It kinda looks like Seattle during the WTO." though she did add, "It's not really the picture of somewhere you want to visit right now."

But raging mobs have never stopped us before. The more the merrier.

Then there was a little blurb about an attempted hi-jacking on a Turkish airplane bound for Istanbul this morning. I tracked it down on the AP feed...

Man Arrested After Alleged Bomb Threat

The Associated Press
Tuesday, June 29, 2004; 10:30 PM

MUNICH, Germany - A Turkish airliner made an emergency landing in Munich Tuesday night after a passenger made a bomb threat, police said.

The Freebird Airlines Airbus with 150 passengers and 7 crew on board had just started its flight from Munich to Istanbul when it reported "security problems,"...

No explosives were found after the plane was searched, police said.

Ganserer did not have any details about the man's nationality or age, and motives were unclear.

No injuries were reported to the passengers or crew, but the man who allegedly made the threat was hurt on the tarmac after either jumping or falling out of the plane once it had landed.
Excellent. Clearly a follower of my "stone-in-paper" manifesto: Make your point, but don't risk messing with anything really dangerous. Like an actual bomb.

Though this poor fellow seems to have had enough trouble disembarking.

Fortunately K's flying from Switzerland, so no reason for me to worry.
